Searching by Collection

Choosing a collection

A list of collections can be found at the homepage. If you do not select a collection, you will search all of them by default. To search only one, click it on the list.

Jumping between collections

After you submit a search, you can jump between collections without having to start over. In the top-left portion of the screen, you can click another collection name.

Newspapers

The Newspapers collection contains the articles and obituaries of historic newspapers published from 1690 - 1970s. High-resolution images of each item are presented in a functional viewer.

Obituaries

The Obituaries collection contains the obituaries of modern newspapers published from 1980 through today and the Social Security Death Index containing records of most Americans from 1962 to current. Individual records are presented in full-text.

Books

The Books collection contains a broad spectrum of printed material published from 1801 - 1900. Some examples are funeral sermons, biographies, broadsides and ship cards. Images of each item are presented in a functional viewer.

Documents

The Documents collection contains a variety of U.S. Government publications printed from 1789 - 1980. Some examples are petitions, casualty lists, memorials and pensions. Images of each item are presented in a funtional viewer.
