Discoveries: Finding Articles about My Ancestors

When I have an extra moment I like to dig for more articles about my family in GenealogyBank's New Hampshire Newspaper Archives.

Recently, I wanted to look for the obituary of Francis B. Sawyer (1823-1907), but I noticed our New Hampshire Newspaper Archives stop at 1891. So, with GenealogyBank adding millions more obituaries every month, I'll have to keep searching in the months ahead to see when the new content I need is added.

But wait— here is an article about the Sawyer sisters of Webster, New Hampshire, that I found doing a broader search.

Boston Herald (Boston, Massachusetts), 7 March 1920, page 35

This article mentions Miss E. E. Sawyer, her two sisters, and a father that died 13 years earlier in Webster, New Hampshire.

This has to be Emma Elvira Sawyer (1861-1933) and her sisters Mary Frances Sawyer (1853-1921) and Sarah Ellen Sawyer (1858-1946).

That's one of the nice surprises about searching newspapers for genealogy: you might look for one article and find another just as valuable to your family history.

Notice that this article appeared in a Massachusetts newspaper. I was doing a broad search for articles about the Sawyer family of New Hampshire. If I had limited my search to only New Hampshire newspapers I would not have found it.

Search Tip: Be sure to search all of GenealogyBank and not limit your search to one state. You never know what you will discover!
