Photos & Illustrations Search Tips

Use this search to find articles containing photos in the historical newspaper archives. This online collection contains photographs and illustrations as published in U.S. newspapers from 1745–1999.

Broad Photo & Illustration Search

Start your photo search by entering the family member’s name that you want a picture of in the Last Name and First Name fields.

Think of other relatives or friends who may also be in a photograph with your ancestor and try searching for their names as well.

Search for Pictures of Reunions & Special Events

Try searching for your ancestor’s last name and the keyword "reunion" in the Include Keywords field. This will help our search engine find pictures of family reunions, class reunions and other reunion events at which your ancestor may have been photographed.

Other keywords that may help you find pictures of your ancestor include "birthday," "married," "wedding," and "wed," as newspapers often publish birthday and wedding photos.

Search for Places

If searching for a specific place, put the name in the Include Keywords field. If the location name is more than one word put it in quotation marks.

Example:

"Benesch’s Store"
