Poems & Songs Search Tips

Use this search to find articles containing poems, epitaphs and songs in the historical newspaper archives. This online collection contains poetry and song as published in U.S. newspapers from 1707–1999.

Broad Poem & Song Search

To keep your poem and song search as broad as possible, search for only the author’s surname initially.

If you need to further narrow your search results, enter the author’s name in the First Name and Last Name fields.

Search by Poem or Song Title

Search for the title of the poem in the Include Keywords field using quotation marks.

Example:

"Grant and Peace"

Search by Content

You may also try searching for a phrase, stanza or lyric in the poem or song by putting it in the Include Keywords field using quotation marks.

Example:

"the angel of the flowers"
