Melissa is a genealogist who has a website, <a href=\"http:\/\/americana-archives.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">americana-archives.com<\/a>, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today I continue my series on \u201cMayflower Descendants: Who\u2019s Who,\u201d featuring Jennifer (Koehler) Mackall, born in 1963 to Christopher Howland and Eleanor Marion (West) Koehler.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer is a direct descendant of <em>Mayflower<\/em> passengers Stephen Hopkins and his children Constance and Giles, William Bradford, George Soule, Thomas Rogers, Joseph Rogers, William Brewster and his wife Mary, Richard Warren, John Tilley, Elizabeth Tilley, and John Howland.<\/p>\n<p>This photo features Jennifer\u2019s great-great-great grandparents Robert Clinton Baker (1867-1956) and Hattie Hamblin (Barstow) Baker (1869-1927), and their children. Nathaniel Hawes Wixon<\/a> (1896-1970), and their daughter Adela Marion Wixon (1921-2011), who married Robert E. J. Credit: Jennifer (Koehler) Mackall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jennifer reached out to me after I published \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/mayflower-descendants-the-mashpee-wampanoag-tribe-part-12.html\">Mayflower Descendants &amp; the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe (part 12)<\/a>\u201d because she is related to early settlers who are said to have married women of Native American heritage and formed connections with <em>Mayflower<\/em> families.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are Nickerson, Wixon\/Wickhams, Maker, Bearse, and Crowel\/Crowell\/Crow.<\/p>\n<p>I found an article listing the names of families whose immigrant ancestors were the inhabitants of the Yarmouth area, published in the <em>Barnstable Patriot<\/em>. He immigrated to America in 1635 on the ship <a href=\"https:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~dtuttle\/genealogy\/GenPages\/Planter_1635.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Planter<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He was described as a \u201ctailor,\u201d but would take on trades as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-CSZC-27QK-L?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooper<\/a> and blacksmith. He married Isabel Twining on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-C9BJ-N4MB-9?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=M9PC-M4M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">17 June 1641<\/a> in Yarmouth \u2013 the first marriage on record there.<\/p>\n<p>Francis shows up in many court cases, which reminds me \u2013 I must do a series on Plymouth Colony gone wild!<\/p>\n<p>Among his transgressions are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-CSZC-273G-B?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retailing wine<\/a> contrary to the court regulations, but was cleared of the charge. On 8 June 1655 he was presented to the court for misusing Samuel, son of John Hall and servant to Francis, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-C9BJ-N4MZ-8?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=M9PC-MW1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by kicking of him and otherwise viscously striking of him<\/a>.\u201d That dispute ended when, on 7 August 1655, the court ordered John Hall to pay Francis Baker \u00a38 for the remainder of Samuel Hall\u2019s time.<\/p>\n<p>Francis also had complaints against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-C9BJ-NSRL-X?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Nacarson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-C9BJ-NSRJ-9?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abraham Hedge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And there was a real hot mess of bawdy behavior in which Francis received 20 sh. each from Thomas Starr and Jonathan Barns for abusive carriage against him; at the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3Q9M-C9BJ-NW1V-7?view=fullText&amp;keywords=Francis%20Baker%2CHedge&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=M9PC-MWB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he and John Casley<\/a> were each fined 3s. 4d. for breach of the peace, and Elisha Hedge accused him and Casley of being drunk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baker Scions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Robert Clinton Baker (1867-1956), Jennifer\u2019s great-great-great grandfather, born to Captain Nathan Foster Baker (1831-1898) and Mary Ann (Studley) Baker (1836-1906).<\/p>\n<p>He was a marble and wood carver, and artist. He started his work at the shop of Harvey Jenks on Main Street in West Dennis, Massachusetts. Credit: Jennifer (Koehler) Mackall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In August 1922 <em>National Magazine<\/em> published an article entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/sim_national-magazine-an-illustrated-monthly_1922-08_51_3\/page\/148\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Up Along\u2019 and \u2018Down Along\u2019 Cape Cod<\/a>,\u201d and Jennifer\u2019s ancestor received a warm review of his famous shop.<\/p>\n<p>It reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Driving along the road across the long bridge at West Dennis we came upon a scene that thrilled with boyhood memories. The spacious lawn before a big white house was covered with tiny, whirring windmills of all sizes; there were aeroplanes and all sorts of grotesque figures dancing merrily to the tune of the whistling breezes.<\/p>\n<p>The automobile containing children seems to involuntarily stop here while the kiddies make their exploration. One youngster put up an unanswerable argument:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy papa, if I have this windmill, we won\u2019t need gasoline,\u201d and the windmill was attached astern as the party drove off.<\/p>\n<p>This was the Baker shop. The lady inside insisted it was not the shop referred to in \u201cShavings,\u201d but that it was the original windmill shop.
