James is an editor at GenealogyMagazine.com and author for JacobusBooks.com, is an award-winning historical true-crime writer, and authorized celebrity biographer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This three-part series has taken a wide-ranging look at the genealogy of the Mobley family, which produced two notable Hollywood actresses: former Miss America Mary Ann Mobley, who appeared in dozens of TV shows and made seven films \u2013 including two with Elvis Presley; and Anne (Mobley) Ramsey, who appeared in numerous TV shows and films, most notably in <em>Throw Momma from the Train<\/em> (1987), with Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito \u2013 a role which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Credit: Alan Light; Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to WikiTree, William Moberly and Ann (Osborn) Moberly of Prince George\u2019s County, Maryland, were the parents of a son named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikitree.com\/wiki\/Mobley-2691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Stewart Moberly<\/a>. (1) However, no records have surfaced confirming the kinship, only that he was one of the Prince George\u2019s County Moberlys.<\/p>\n<p>By his own account, William Stewart Moberly\/Mobley was born in Prince George\u2019s County, Maryland, in1750, migrated to North Carolina, and settled in Guilford County \u2013 where he was drafted into military service in 1780, according to the Revolutionary War pension application he filed in 1845 at age 95. In a letter to the Commissioner of Pensions on 23 December 1852, attorney H. C. Spalding stated that William Stewart Moberly\u2019s application had been suspended. \u201cThe Soldier is now dead, and the power of attorney comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:3QHK-87MP-D62D?view=fullText&amp;keywords=William%20Stewart%20Mobley&amp;lang=en&amp;groupId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nathan Mobley<\/a> his legal heir,\u201d Spalding wrote.<\/p>\n<p>According to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/54447895\/nathan-mobley?_gl=1*d3wokb*_gcl_au*MTY5MjUwMDk3OC4xNzcxNTM3NTg1*_ga*ODE5NTYzOTc5LjE3NTU5NjM1MTk.*_ga_4QT8FMEX30*czI0MzFjMzJjLTJlMDYtNDkyZC1hMzIyLTUwODEwMWNkZGIxMSRvNjIwJGcxJHQxNzcyNzMxNDI3JGo0NSRsMCRoMA..*_ga_LMK6K2LSJH*czI0MzFjMzJjLTJlMDYtNDkyZC1hMzIyLTUwODEwMWNkZGIxMSRvNjIxJGcxJHQxNzcyNzMxNDI3JGo0NiRsMCRoMA..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tombstone<\/a>, Nathan Mobley was born on 13 July 1809. He married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:Q21B-WWB6?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Peay<\/a> on 3 December 1835 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Mobley.\u201d Eight children are reported living with Nathan and Mary, ranging in age from 14 to 1, including a 12-year-old male, C. W. W.\u201d is Calvin Washington \u201cWash\u201d Mobley, born to Nathan and Mary in Rockingham County on 5 May 1837, according to his son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:F363-D7C?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John W. Mobley<\/a>. Wash\u2019s education was limited to elementary school. He farmed and served as a private in the 5th Regiment, Company D, of the North Carolina Cavalry in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:F9JG-1M2?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Confederate Army<\/a>. (2)<\/p>\n<p>On 26 November 1861, he married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:Q28R-NK4B?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary L. Irvin<\/a> in Rockingham County. The 1870 census listed four children in their household, ranging in age from 6 to 1. The following year, he graduated from the University of North Carolina and soon began a career in the insurance industry. (4)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobley Family\u2019s Second Path to the Silver Screen \u2013 Anne (Mobley) Ramsey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1930, Nathan, an insurance executive, wife Eleanor, and their one-year-old daughter Anne lived in Great Neck, New York, as reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:X78B-6QM?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">census<\/a> that year.<\/p>\n<p>Anne was born on 27 March 1929 when the Mobleys lived in Omaha. (5) The family was in Great Neck in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:KQY7-S42?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1940<\/a>, by which time two other children had been born. Sadly, their second daughter, Eleanor, died suddenly and was buried on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/doc\/newspapers\/image\/v2%3A1106B5BBD4B623A8%40GB3NEWS-1367288B1FC56557%402426849-13604988ED55180F%4015-13604988ED55180F%40?h=66&amp;fname=Nathan&amp;lname=Mobley&amp;fullname=&amp;kwinc=&amp;kwexc=&amp;rgfromDate=1929&amp;rgtoDate=1950&amp;formDate=&amp;formDateFlex=exact&amp;dateType=range&amp;processingtime=&amp;addedFrom=&amp;addedTo=&amp;page=4&amp;sid=eqobdewshjugxuwevwgkhzzypbdhaboo_ip-10-166-46-165_1772557250329\">second birthday<\/a>. (6)<\/p>\n<p>She was a student at Bennington College in Vermont in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:6XL4-SFVX?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1950<\/a>. Both continued in show business, with dozens of appearances in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies and television<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Surgery for throat cancer caused a partial removal of her tongue, leaving a speech impediment. Still, it did not stop her from landing her big break after a 37-year acting career. Despite the intense pain, she never asked to be excused from work. That role led to an Academy Award nomination.
