I was reviewing old family correspondence to make sure all of this family data had been properly recorded, and the correspondence scanned and added to the family\u2019s online archive. I came across this letter written to us in 2003.<\/p>\n

This line caught my eye: \u201cDid [I] tell you my brother Tom died March 9, \u201903?\u201d<\/p>\n

It turns out I didn\u2019t have her \u201cbrother Tom\u201d in the family tree.<\/p>\n

So I began searching for him in GenealogyBank.com<\/a><\/p>\n

Looking for him as Tom, Thomas or just T \u2013 I wasn\u2019t finding any mention of him.<\/p>\n

So I searched using only his surname and the year of his death.<\/p>\n

That worked \u2013 it pulled up two Krabachs that died that year, and one of them was him.<\/p>\n

The death date was a match.<\/p>\n

So it turns out that his full name was Raymond Francis Krabach \u2013 and that he used the nickname \u201cTom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Genealogy Tip:<\/em><\/strong> The family member you\u2019re searching for may have used a nickname unknown to you. Sometimes the best search is the simplest: just a surname, or a surname and a date.<\/p>\n

Keep at it \u2013 if your first search doesn\u2019t get you the results you want, take a different approach.<\/p>\n

Now to find the details of \u201cPaul\u2019s sister Jean,\u201d also mentioned in that 2003 letter.<\/p>\n
