Mary is a genealogist, author and editor with a strong technology background.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most people don\u2019t marry close relations, but sometimes while tracing ancestry you might observe cousins that married close cousins. Most of the answers came from questions posed to advice columnists.<\/p>\n<p>In many places it was against the law for cousins to marry, but not everywhere. Some of the supporting reasons for or against the practice were interesting \u2013 and others, somewhat amusing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responses to the question: Should Cousins Marry?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1907<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1907, I found an article written by an eminent, but unnamed, German specialist.<\/p>\n<p>He addressed the theory that marriages between blood relations produced unhealthy children \u2013 and concluded that the various laws prohibiting unions between alcoholics, as well as those with tuberculosis and deafness, were more important than laws prohibiting marriage between close cousins.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29989\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/doc\/newspapers\/image\/v2:1106B5BBD4B623A8@GB3NEWS-1334BC2546B33F1B@2417925-133270C394CE2449@28-133270C394CE2449\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/omaha-world-herald-newspaper-1215-1907-cousins-marriage.png\" alt=\"An article about cousins marrying, Omaha World-Herald newspaper article 15 December 1907\" width=\"603\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/omaha-world-herald-newspaper-1215-1907-cousins-marriage.png 603w, https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/omaha-world-herald-newspaper-1215-1907-cousins-marriage-300x220.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Omaha World-Herald (Omaha, Nebraska), 15 December 1907, page 29<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1910<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Adams, whose advice column ran across the country in 1910, felt it was not advisable for persons so closely related as first cousins to marry. In many states the marriage of first cousins is illegal. True, this law may be evaded by having the wedding ceremony performed in another state but there are unpleasant complications about the children&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marriage of cousins is less a question of right and wrong than of expedience. The close blood ties is inadvisable, if not dangerous. Such a marriage may turn out all right and \u2013 IT MAY NOT! They had the same surname, but hadn\u2019t realized their fathers were brothers because they were estranged. This column noted that the district attorney would let her know the legality of the marriage the next day.
