Researching my cousin Daniel Davis (1814-1902)<\/a>, I found him in the 1880 census.<\/p>\n

It tells me he was a \u201cBoot & Shoemaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking to see what I could find about Daniel in GenealogyBank\u2019s Historical Newspaper Archives<\/a>, I found this advertisement for his services.<\/p>\n

Interesting. This advertisement says that he also sold sewing machines.<\/p>\n

Looking further in the old newspapers, I found this ad specifically for the sewing machines he sold.<\/p>\n

He pitched the fitness of this sewing machine \u2013 its durability, quietness and his flexible financial terms.<\/p>\n

He asked all interested customers \u201cto give us a call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wait, this ad was published in 1872.
\nWhat did they mean by \u201cgive us a call\u201d?
\nI think of that as a reference to calling them on the telephone \u2013 but the telephone would not be invented until 1876.<\/p>\n

So, I searched for that phrase in the old newspapers and found that it was commonly used as far back as 1795. It meant \u201ccome and visit us, pay us a call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fascinating.<\/p>\n
