Melissa is a genealogist who has a blog, AnceStory Archives, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While doing some research in GenealogyBank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/explore\/newspapers\/all?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=SM_Blog_txtlnk_2014_00&amp;s_referrer=social&amp;s_siteloc=blog&amp;s_trackval=SM_Blog_txtlnk_2014_00&amp;kbid=69919&amp;pq=1&amp;prebuy=no&amp;intver=&amp;CCPRODCODE=\">Historical Newspaper Archives<\/a> recently, I came upon this story of William Beattie.<\/p>\n<p>When the magnate financier James Hobart Moore departed this earth 17 July 1916, the public learned that the wealthy tycoon had a very tender affection for those who were in his service. Although Moore\u2019s generosity was well known by a multitude of charitable donations, it was the deep pockets of gratitude to one coachman that make this millionaire magnet stand out.<\/p>\n<p>James H. Moore took a $4 million hit when his Diamond Match Company crashed and drained all his funds. He became a pauper overnight. He had been to the bank and drawn out every cent he had saved, $2,000. \u2018Take it,\u2019 he said. \u2018I got it from you, and you are welcome to keep it as long as you want it.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moore accepted the sum and never forgot this kind gesture, which got him through the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In a single year, by organizing the National Biscuit Company and the American Tin Plate Company, as well as several steel companies, Moore made his next round of millions and he paid Beattie back \u2013 so richly that the coachman was worth over $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his windfall Beattie remained coachman for Moore\u2019s widow, Laura Josephine Small Moore.<\/p>\n<p>Beattie had it pretty good working at the Moore estate \u201cLoramoor\u201d in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, known as \u201cThe Newport of the West.\u201d The estate was valued at $15 million and the stables were the finest around, \u201ca model of comfort, luxury, and elegance, built to accommodate 60 horses in oak stalls trimmed with brass and leaded glass partitions separating carriages from stalls.\u201d (Lake Geneva Historical Society Bulletin)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53659\" style=\"width: 847px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/los-angeles-times-newspaper-0128-1906-loramoor-photo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/los-angeles-times-newspaper-0128-1906-loramoor-photo.png\" alt=\"A photo of the estate of James H. His name was John Edward Gehlert, a prosperous embalmer and sexton for several New York churches.
