Melissa is a genealogist who has a blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestoryarchives.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AnceStory Archives<\/a>, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1875 the <em>Salem Register<\/em> reported that they viewed a rare and valuable Bible brought over from England by a group that included Robert Buffum in 1638. He was one of the earliest settlers in Salem, Massachusetts. Their son Joshua married Elizabeth Beck; and their daughter Elizabeth married John Buxton, son of Joseph and Esther (Southwick) Buxton. (Esther Southwick was the granddaughter of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick, whom I\u2019ve written about \u2013 see links at the end of this article.)<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a notation in the Bible that reads \u201cElizabeth Buffum her bibel [sic] writen [sic] in the year 1723.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Elizabeth and John Buxton\u2019s daughter Abigail married Abner Jones, son of John and Susannah (Fowler) Jones. Abner and his family were Quakers living in Amesbury, Massachusetts.<\/li>\n<li>Abigail and Abner\u2019s daughter Sarah married Samuel Fowler, son of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Fowler. A daughter Esther (owner of the Bible in 1875) married Daniel Southwick.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the <em>Salem Register<\/em> article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSarah Jones, daughter of Abner and Abigail (or Abagall, as it is written in the book [the Bible]), married Samuel Fowler and came to Salem in 1794 and settled on the same land once occupied by Joshua Buffum, her great-grandfather, and brought back the Bible to the place whence it had been taken by her grandmother.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I found Samuel\u2019s death announcement in the <em>Gloucester Telegraph<\/em> noting that he was a member of the Society of Friends.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78565\" style=\"width: 764px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/doc\/newspapers\/image\/v2%3A123D88A8D6783EEF%40GB3NEWS-1270C87B5293D430%402396417-1270C87B8725D968%402-1270C87C3AFAD4C8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-78565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gloucester-telegraph-newspaper-0124-1849-death-notice.jpg\" alt=\"An obituary for Samuel Fowler, Gloucester Telegraph newspaper article 24 January 1849\" width=\"764\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gloucester-telegraph-newspaper-0124-1849-death-notice.jpg 764w, https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gloucester-telegraph-newspaper-0124-1849-death-notice-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gloucester Telegraph (Gloucester, Massachusetts), 24 January 1849, page 3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Samuel and his wife are buried in the Quaker Cemetery on Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2019 Salem placed a new marker dedicated to the Quaker burial site, which is the third oldest cemetery. Credit: Ryan McBride; Salem News.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Buffum\u2019s were among the first to embrace the doctrine of the Friends, and they were in consequence subjected with others to cruel punishments for deviating from the Puritan church.<\/p>\n<p>All of Robert\u2019s children endured lashings, fines, jail, and banishment. Robert\u2019s daughter Deborah, wife of Robert Wilson, was tied to a cart tail and whipped through the streets.
