The petition sets forth the intention to make the corporation a sort of mother society for organizations of Mayflower descendants now in existence in various states.<\/p>\n<p>The organization purposes, the petition says, \u201cto perpetuate to a remote posterity the memory of the Pilgrim fathers and to maintain and defend the principles of civil and religious liberty as set forth in the compact of the Mayflower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the signers are Chief Justice [William Howard] Taft and Senator [Henry Cabot] Lodge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I found the petition detailed in the \u201cProceeding of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Tenth General Congress, Plymouth, Mass., September 2-3, 1924,\u201d pages 82-85.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87333\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo-1018-2022-mayflower-descendants-petition.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-87333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo-1018-2022-mayflower-descendants-petition.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: petition from Mayflower descendants. Dowse, Howland Davis, George Ernest Bowman, Addison P. He improved sanitary conditions and medical care in the United States as well as outside the country. He was the personal physician to President McKinley and his wife.<\/p>\n<p>In 1920 Wood was a candidate for president, and the <em>Columbus Evening Dispatch<\/em> referenced his potent pedigree that contributed to his character and sense of duty. These four, out of 22 heads of families who founded the New England commonwealth amid hardships untold, were: William White, Francis Cooke, Stephen Hopkins, and Richard Warren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026In Wood\u2019s pedigree,\u201d [according to his biographer, Eric Fisher Wood \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/conservator00woodrich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonard Wood, Conservator of Americanism; A Biography<\/a>] \u201cwe discover an unprecedented record, for among his hundreds of known ancestors not one is found who cannot surpass the severest test of Americanism. From earliest times his forbears have striven for that ideal condition where love of personal liberty is happily balanced by respect for constitutional law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the New England which his ancestors had helped to found, Leonard Wood was born on Oct. 9, 1860, at Winchester, N.H. His parents were Charles Jewett Wood, born at Leicester, Mass., and Caroline Hager, born at Weston, Mass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wood has ancestorial lines that were part of the Jamestown Virginia Company. In addition, he has Newbury, Massachusetts, first settlers and Quaker ties: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2X24RoU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tristram and Dionis Coffin<\/a>; Nathaniel Clarke; <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3vxH52Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Phelps and Elizabeth Adams, daughter of Robert Adams<\/a>; Edmond Greenleaf; <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3offVty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Short<\/a>; Edward Woodman; John Kent; and Peter Toppan. He also has ties to the early families of Andover, Massachusetts, including: Abbott; Ballard; and Farnham; as well as Salisbury settlers Orlando Bagley and Sarah Colby, daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newburyportnews.com\/opinion\/the-vibrant-energy-of-the-colby-family\/article_d17ef39a-6d25-58f7-8399-8983d4aab085.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Colby<\/a>.
