Martha F. Fenstermaker (1943-2014) recently passed away, and in her published obituary it mentioned that she was \u201ca direct descendant of Samuel Augustus Maverick<\/a>, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence<\/a>.\u201d Her obituary also states she was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.<\/p>\n

Her ancestor\u2019s last name \u201cMaverick\u201d is where we get that word from, based on his tendency to be \u201cindividually minded.\u201d He refused to brand his cattle\u2014and in Texas, unbranded cattle came to be called mavericks, and the term stuck.<\/p>\n
