Melissa is a genealogist who has a blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestoryarchives.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AnceStory Archives<\/a>, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today I continue with my series \u201cMayflower Descendants: Who\u2019s Who,\u201d focusing on the lineage of the Crocker family who married into several <em>Mayflower<\/em> lines.<\/p>\n<p>To recap: I am working with a client, Katie Crocker, daughter of James and Debra Sue (Pemberton) Crocker of Barnstable, Massachusetts, on her family tree. Part of this series explored Katie\u2019s Hinckley lines that married many <em>Mayflower<\/em> scions.<\/p>\n<p>A collection of six photographs was sent to me from the archivist at Sturgis Library in Barnstable, contents from the Zenas Crocker Collection MS 167.<\/p>\n<p>The following subjects all descend from <em>Mayflower<\/em> lines and other notable first families of Cape Cod and are among the cousins who share Katie\u2019s lineage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lizzie and Cordelia Hinckley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first photo from the collection is Elizabeth \u201cLizzie\u201d Bass Pearmain Hinckley (1841-1921) and her daughter Cordelia Pearmain Hinckley (1868-1948).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94377\" style=\"width: 568px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo-0912-2023-elizabeth-cordelia-hinckley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo-0912-2023-elizabeth-cordelia-hinckley.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Lizzie Hinckley and her daughter Cordelia Hinckley. Thomas Prence, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QS0AkA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samuel Hinckley<\/a>, and <em>Mayflower<\/em> passengers Richard Warren, Edward Fuller, John Alden, and Priscilla Mullins.<\/p>\n<p>She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her patriot ancestor was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/7505920\/josiah-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josiah Miller Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lizzie married Sylvester Baxter Hinckley (1841-1906), son of Freeman Hinckley and Emily Baxter and a descendant of <em>Mayflower<\/em> passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Baxter\u2019s line can be traced back to Thomas Baxter and his wife Temperence Gorham, daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44a6ZKZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Gorham and Desire Howland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1891 Lizzie\u2019s daughter Cordelia married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/219223984\/george-hutchins-bingham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judge George Hutchins Bingham<\/a>, son of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nh.gov\/nhdhr\/publications\/justices\/binghamga.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hon. George Azro Bingham<\/a> and Eliza Woods. He spent his boyhood in Chelsea, receiving his education there and finishing in a classical school at Newton. In his early manhood he was in business successively in Washington, D.C., and New York. In 1865 he went into business with his father, Freeman Hinckley [photo below], under the firm name of Hinckley Bros. &amp; Co., in the cordage manufacturing and selling business. He retired from business 14 years ago, occupying himself actively, however, with financial matters.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his later presidency of the First National Bank, he has been a large operator in real estate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sylvester was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through his ancestor John Cobb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freeman Hinckley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next photo from the collection is Freeman Hinckley (1812-1884), son of David Hinckley and Hannah Merchant. He married Emily Baxter (1820-1893), daughter of Sylvester Baxter and Marcy B. Parker. Credit: Sturgis Library, from the Zenas Crocker Collection MS 167.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found this notice in the <em>Boston Daily Advertiser<\/em> newspaper for the Hinckley business.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94385\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/doc\/newspapers\/image\/v2%3A109E426370EFFFF8%40GB3NEWS-12B5CA1BAF966750%402402628-12B5CA1C4627BAB8%402-12B5CA1E92C9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-94385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/boston-daily-advertiser-newspaper-0126-1866-freeman-hinckley.jpg\" alt=\"An article about Freeman Hinckley, Boston Daily Advertiser newspaper 26 January 1866\" width=\"498\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/boston-daily-advertiser-newspaper-0126-1866-freeman-hinckley.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/boston-daily-advertiser-newspaper-0126-1866-freeman-hinckley-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boston Daily Advertiser (Boston, Massachusetts), 26 January 1866, page 3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As this notice explained, a \u201cship chandlery and ship store business\u201d named Howland, Hinckley &amp; Co. and owned by David Howland, Freeman Hinckley, and David Hinckley was \u201cthis day dissolved by mutual consent.\u201d The business was replaced by a new firm named Hinckley Bros &amp; Co. and owned by Freeman Hinckley, David Hinckley, and Sylvester Baxter Hinckley.<\/p>\n<p>Freeman Hinckley\u2019s partners in the original business were: brother David Hinckley (1806-1868), who married Elizabeth Allen Dillingham, daughter of Lemuel Dillingham and Mercey Tobey; and David Howland (1805-1886), son of John Coleman Howland and Martha Thatcher, who married Rebecca Crocker, daughter of Loring Crocker and Alice Hinckley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loring and Temperance Crocker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Howland\u2019s wife Rebecca had a brother, Loring Crocker (1809-1887), who married Temperance Nye (1809-1872), daughter of Jabez Nye and Polly Crocker Hinckley. He was born August 16, 1809, in Barnstable. Residing in Boston a few years previous to 1830, he was among the earliest members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mechanic_Apprentices_Library_Association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mechanic Apprentices Library Association<\/a>. [Some notable members were Sir Isaac Coffin, Daniel Webster, John Quincy Adams, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.] In company with his brother, the late <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/historyofbarnsta00deyo\/page\/n481\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hon.
