Melissa is a genealogist who has a website, <a href=\"http:\/\/americana-archives.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">americana-archives.com<\/a>, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A photo album in the collection of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.californiapioneers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society of California Pioneers<\/a> holds the family pictures of New England-born Captain Joseph Warren Osborn (1818-1863) and his wife Lucretia Ann (Moore) Osborn (1821-1891). They married on 3 October 1852 in San Francisco, California.<\/p>\n<p>I found many interesting newspaper clips on the family in GenealogyBank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/explore\/newspapers\/all?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=SM_Blog_txtlnk_2014_00&amp;s_referrer=social&amp;s_siteloc=blog&amp;s_trackval=SM_Blog_txtlnk_2014_00&amp;kbid=69919&amp;pq=1&amp;prebuy=no&amp;intver=&amp;CCPRODCODE=\">Historical Newspaper Archives<\/a> and will cover them in the second part of this series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Photo Album<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first page of the album has an image of \u201cOak Knoll,\u201d the Napa Valley, California, vineyard and estate of Captain Osborn, with an inscription: \u201cMrs. L. Credit: Society of California Pioneers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Captain Osborn was born in Salem, Massachusetts, to William and Anna (Bowditch) Osborn, whose photographs are part of the family album.<\/p>\n<p>The captain\u2019s father, William Osborn (1792-1892), is the son of Aaron and Lydia (Proctor) Osborn. Credit: Society of California Pioneers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Captain Osborn had a brother, railroad tycoon and philanthropist <a href=\"https:\/\/househistree.com\/people\/william-henry-osborn-1820-1894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Henry Osborn<\/a> (1820-1894), who served as president of the Illinois Central Railroad (and later president of the Chicago, St. Louis &amp; New Orleans Railroad), a position solidified through his marriage to Virginia Reed Sturges, daughter of Jonathan Sturges, a New York merchant and one of the incorporators of the Illinois Central Railroad.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Osborn was a direct descendant of Samuel Symonds, Quakers <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3e7EtTn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lawrence and Cassander Southwick<\/a>, Thomas Gardner, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wUOmtN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Bowditch and Mary Gardner<\/a>, and John Proctor \u2013 who was executed for witchcraft in the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.<\/p>\n<p>According to George Granville Putnam\u2019s account of Salem vessels published by the Essex Institute of Peabody (now Peabody Essex Museum), Captain Osborn commanded several ships including the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/salemvesselsthei00putn\/page\/n369\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>St. Paul<\/em><\/a> in 1841. At some point after that voyage, he set his sights on California\u2019s Napa Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Putnam noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He [Captain Osborn] was a pioneer there [California], and was shot April 25, 1863, by a man whom he had hired for a year, but whom he had discharged. He left a widow and three children. He was very highly esteemed in his hometown in California.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are two more photos from the family album, of Captain Osborn and his daughter Katharine \u201cKitty\u201d Osborn (1855-1925). Credit: Society of California Pioneers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Captain Osborn\u2019s wife Lucretia Ann (Moore) Osborn was born in Massachusetts to journalist, printer, newspaper editor, historical writer, and San Fransisco\u2019s first postmaster, Jacob Bailey II and his wife Mary Adams (Hill) Moore, sister to Isaac Hill \u2013 who was a journalist, political commentator, newspaper editor, United States senator, and 16th governor of New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Lucretia descends from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/42QPf7v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Dudley<\/a> and Simon Bradstreet, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2X24RoU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tristram and Dionis Coffin<\/a>, Edward Starbuck, Henry Lunt, Anthony Somerby, Richard Knight, John Pike, Henry Brown, Edward French, Thomas Bradbury and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genealogymagazine.com\/witchcraft-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary (Perkins) Bradbury<\/a> \u2013 who was accused of witchcraft in the 1692 Salem Witch Trials and sentenced to be executed, but escaped the gallows.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a photo of Lucretia and one of her infant children, most likely her son Warren Moore Osborn, born in 1861, who married Mildred Fenn, daughter of Julius and Celia J.
