Melissa is a genealogist who has a website, <a href=\"http:\/\/americana-archives.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">americana-archives.com<\/a>, and a Facebook group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HistoryGenNEFamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Family Genealogy and History<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The vast collection of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nantucket Historical Association<\/a> (NHA) contains a plethora of old photographs and relics which link to the ancestral lines of Desire (Howland) Gorham, daughter of <em>Mayflower<\/em> passengers <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3H83vAd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Howland<\/a> and Elizabeth Tilley, who married <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.genealogybank.com\/mayflower-descendants-whos-who-part-35-part-4.html\">John Gorham<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gorham Hussey and Lydia Macy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite images in the NHA collection is a photogravure print reproduced in a painting by artist Alexander Seaverns entitled <em>A Nantucket Grandmother<\/em>, depicting the island\u2019s old Quaker lifestyle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99531\" style=\"width: 944px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-99531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/illustration-0709-2024-lydia-hussey.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration: \u201cA Nantucket Grandmother,\u201d by Alexander Seaverns. There is a cat sitting at her feet in the foreground with fireplace, spinning wheel, and cupboard in the background.<\/p>\n<p>The subject is Mrs. Lydia Hussey (1798-1885), born Lydia Macy, daughter of Job and Lydia (Gardner) Macy. She married Gorham Hussey (1797-1879), son of George Gorham and Lydia (Chase) Hussey. Gorham Hussey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nantuckethistory.org:443\/permalink\/?key=6000_m5845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journal<\/a> is housed at NHA.<\/p>\n<p>Gorham Hussey is a 6th generation descendant of John and Desire (Howland) Gorham:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>through their son John Gorham Jr., who married Mary Otis;<\/li>\n<li>their son Stephen Gorham married Elizabeth Gardner;<\/li>\n<li>their daughter Susanna Gorham married Daniel Paddock;<\/li>\n<li>their daughter Deborah Paddock married George Hussey;<\/li>\n<li>their son George Gorham Hussey married Lydia Chase;<\/li>\n<li>their son is Gorham Hussey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gorham and Lydia (Macy) Hussey lived at 13 Vestal Street in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The house was built around 1820, the same year their twin daughters Mary and Martha Hussey were born. Credit: Nantucket Historical Association.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other children born to Gorham and Lydia (Macy) Hussey include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Susan Hussey (1822-1889), married William R. Gardner (1823-1865), son of Benjamin and Rachel (Folger) Gardner. Their children: Lydia M. Gardner (1845-1908), never married; Emily Gardner (1848-1883), never married; Nelson Gardner (1850-1871), never married; and George Gorman Gardner (1853-1933), married Clara Joy Coyle (1869-1944), daughter of Thomas George and Anastasia Briget (Gauthier) Coyle, and left descendants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Captain George Gorham Hussey (1823\u20131852), married Avis Myrick Hussey (1829-1906), daughter of Captain John Hussey and Eliza Myrick. They had three daughters: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uMYYQ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rebecca Chase Hussey<\/a> (1847-1911), married artist and photographer Henry Sherman Wyer, son of Charles and Mary Jane (Coleman) Wyer; Susan Elizabeth Hussey (1852-1927), married New York lawyer John E. Roe, son of Samuel T. and Lauraett (Heath) Roe; and Eliza Myrick Hussey (1850-1939), never married.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99534\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-99534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/photo-0709-2024-rebecca-hussey-wyer.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Rebecca Chase (Hussey) Wyer. Credit: Nantucket Historical Association.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Captain George Gorham Hussey was master of the packet schooner <em>Heroine<\/em> that sailed between New Orleans, Gulf Coast ports, and Panama in the late 1840s and early 1850s. In 1850 the ship was detained by the Spanish government under suspicion of smuggling arms into Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>Another drama for Captain Hussey was his involvement in a mutiny case involving the American brig <em>Henry Buck<\/em>, whose Captain David Woodside was threatened with mutiny by four of his crew.<\/p>\n<p>According to this newspaper report, Captain Hussey assisted Captain Woodside, brought him on board the <em>Heroine<\/em>, and placed the mutineers in irons until the ship reached safe port.
