The petition of Jonathan Hasbrouck, of the county of Orange, respectfully represents, that the piece of property in Newburgh, known as Washington's Head Quarters, has been in his family as an inheritance for more than a hundred years. ... until the year 1849, when the petitioner ... having mortgaged it to the state for a loan of $2,000, was unable to pay said moneys, and it was sold, and the state became the purchaser. ...
