[From Our Regular Correspondent.] EASTPORT. Me.. Jan. 23, 1901. LARGE and fierce animal of an unknown species has for several days been terrorizing the farm ers of Perry, six miles from here. Many sheep and barnyard fowls have fallen victims to the animal, which con tinues Its depredations in spite of the fact that numerous gunning expeditions have been made. The tracks ore unlike those of a bear, and seem' to be too. large for a wildcat or lynx, although some Canadian- lynxes have been shot In the past which had grown to great size. The first indication of the animal’s presence in tiie local’ly was early in the month, when a party of young sportsmen who were camping our at Birch's Point were awakened in the night by hideous screams. They found nothing in the morning except the strange tracks. Within a few days af terward 10 sheep were killed in nearby barn yards. Some of tiie veteran hunters believe that the animal may be a panther, of which there were many years ago a large number. It is now 10 years since a panther was seen in the woods of Maine, but the animals are long-lived, and it is not impossible that there may still be left one or two of the species. 4. o. I <>.
