Description: KTKA
ager. KLDH-TV hasn’t smaller over give support resumes broadcasting Television station KLDH, knocked off the air by the March 18 ice storm, began broadcasting with partial power at 7 p.m. Sunday. Gary Krohe, KLDH director of engi neering, said the station’s strongest signal now would generally cover the Topeka area, although people with good rooftop antennas will be able to receive it to the west as far as Man hattan and to the east beyond Law rence. “And anyone on a cable system within 30 to 40 miles of us should have no problem,” Krohe said. The station’s 1,439-foot tower col lapsed during the ice storm, and work ers have labored against wind and rain since then to erect a shorter tempo rary tower that will serve until a per manent tower can be erected. Krohe said workers had to battle the weather right up to the end. “We had rotten weather Sunday but we worked right through it,” he said. “A thunderstorm went through this af ternoon (Sunday) and we had people on the tower who couldn’t get down. They just hung on tight and kept working. “We’re back on for good. If a torna do comes through here tomorrow I’m not going to promise anything, but as far as the Topeka area, we’re back on.” He said the station was operating now at 575 kilowatts of radiated pow er, compared to normal power of 3,475 kw. He estimated that a taller, perma nent tower would be in place in five to six months, allowing the station to go to full power. The temporary tower is 400 feet. The station laid off many staff members shortly after the tower fell. Bob Totten, KLDH news director, said news personnel probably would not be rehired until the permanent tower is up. In the meantime, he and Tom Christiansen, program director, will present news briefs during the daily programming to complement ABC network news. Totten said an audio problem that developed when the station returned to the air should be cleared up today. Before the ice storm, KLDH’s signal reached from Junction City to Kansas City.
