Description: A25
BAY AREA/CAUFORNIA San3ia»tiito Q|W«clf A2S KTSF: Filipino Americans Threaten Boycott Over Cut Program From Page A19 ' Normandy, chairman emeritus of the National Filipino American Council and president of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commis sion. Normandy said Filipino com munity leaders already are “hav ing talks” with advertisers. He and others accused KTSF of falsely purporting to.serve the Filipino American community to attract advertisers interested in reaching the large ethnic population. KTSF, based, in Brisbane, de votes itself to ethnic community programming and offers Chinese and Vietnamese news broadcasts. Rose Shirinian, the news direc tor at KTSF, refused to comment yesterday, referring reporters to the station’s promotions manager, who was unavailable yesterday. For six months, KTSFs “Filipi no Report” provided 15 minutes of locally produced broadcast news and explanatory journalism in Ta- galog, the language spoken by Fili pinos, and has had a large follow ing in the Filipino American Bay Area community, speakers said at a news conference yesterday. “I have not seen or known of a program that has attracted such a following. This program has uni fied the community and has in formed the community about what was happening,” said Rodel Rodis, vice president of the board of City College of San Francisco. Then, last month, station man agers announced their intention to Alleged Swindler's cut the news report to five minutes and replace it with a program that community members described as a sensationalized “Hard Copy”- style show from the Philippines. Within days, the television sta tion abruptly lost three staff mem bers to resignations: “Filipino Re port” producer Margaret Lacson; its sole reporter, Diana Benedicto; and KTSFs general manager, Bri an Holton. A station spokeswoman said weeks ago that Holton, who sup ported the “Filipino Report,” left to pursue other interests and did not resign as a result of any of the controversy surrounding the cut ting of “Filipino Report” Community leaders said they intend to pressure the television station to bring the local news show back and extend it from 15 minutes to 30 minutes. So far, however, their attempts to initiate talks with KTSF manag ers have failed. •PATIO SETS-C.HAISE LOUNGES*SW!NGS»HAMMOCKS-GLIDERS«UMBRELLAS* A CHANCE GFRAIN+GREAT WEATVER AHEAD x A HUGE SELECTION+AFEW WEEKS HU SPRING= See The Bay Area's * Largest Selection Of Quality Outdoor Furniture!
