Description: A12; WXLV
Jerry Kenion On TV New Station Testing WGNN-TV, a new TV station broadcasting on Chan nel 45 in Winston-Salem, has been conducting on-air program testing for a week. According to John Todd, general manager of the non-profit Christian station, the station should be licensed within a month. During the test period, Ch. 45 is broadcasting from 5 to 11:30 p.m., Sunday through Friday. Saturday the station is off the air for maintenance of the transmitter. It will be a few weeks before WGNN’s schedule is included in the program listings. Todd said there is a possibility that all the programs scheduled during the test period will not be carried over to the regular schedule. The current Ch. 45 schedule, on weekdays, is: 5-7 p.m., “PTL Club”; 7-9 p.m., “Classic Theater” (old movies); 9-10:30 p.m., “The 700 Club”; and 10:30-11:30 p.m., “Ross Bagley” (religious music). Sunday’s pro gramming: 5-7 p.m., “PTL Club”; 7-8:30 p.m., “Classic Theater”; 8:30-9 p.m., “Day of Discovery” (Bible class); 9-10 p.m., “Jerrv Falwell”; and 10-11:30 p.m., “The 700 Club.” Cable television will be required to carry Ch. 45’s signal in this area. Greensboro’s Cablevision will cany Ch. 45 on cable channel 7, beginning today, replacing the PTL Network during the hours WGNN is on the air. In High Point, Ch. 45 will be on cable channel 7, and in Winston-Salem, it will be on cable channel 10, replacing Charlotte’s Ch. 36, during Ch. 45’s broadcast hours. WGNN is owned by Good News TV Network Inc., an interdenominational, non-profit corporation formed in 1977 to start this station. Among those on the board of directors for the corporation are Winston-Salem at torneys Dave Blanco and Wes Bailey, and Baptist minis ter Mark Corts. Currently the station is running a minimum of com mercials, in order to be self-supporting. However, an application is pending with the FCC to make some changes in the financial setup of the station. Again, casting director Reuben Cannon is sending out a Southern SOS for a youngster to portray a charac ter in the upcoming CBS drama series being co-pro duced by Alex Haley and Norman Lear. This time the part calls for a 15-year-old, handi capped white boy. The character in the drama walks with a crutch, and rather than casting a seasoned actor and teaching him crutch use, the producers are offering the role to a youngster with a real-life need for a crutch. To be considered for the role, the boy must use a crutch as an extension of himself, and be able to jump a fence, mount a horse, compete in a foot race — and join in other activities enjoyed by boys his age. Southerners with natural accents will be given pref erence. Boys who would like to be auditioned should contact Reuben Cannon right away at 4063 Radford Ave., Studio City, Cal., 91604. Applicants should send a snapshot, along with name, address, birthdate, color of hair and eyes, weight, and dramatic experience. * * * NBC’s promotional campaign, “Proud as a Pea cock,” with the new version of the bird and the catchy song, was the most recognizable of the three network campaigns, accord ing to viewer survey information released by NBC. And, that bird will join the network’s new NBC logo to be known as “The Proud N.” The new symbol, the network says, is a blend intended to show NBC’s “continuing pride in our programs and in the network.” Allen To Sing Mezzo-soprano Betty Allen will kick off the first of a series of appearances by North Carolina School of the Arts faculty at the Southeastern Center for Contempo rary Arts with an 8:15 p.m., Wednesday performance in the living room of the center in Winston-Salem.
