Genealogy Tips: Irish Deaths Recorded in American Newspapers

You don’t expect to look in a U.S. source for deaths in another country.

One of the great features of the Irish American Weekly, a newspaper published in New York City, is that it routinely published obituaries of Irish men and women that died in Ireland.

Irish American Weekly (New York, New York), 31 May 1879, page 6

They ran a long obituary column every week – thousands of Irish deaths were published in that newspaper, such as these three in 1879:

  • Thomas Byrne, age 30, died 8 May 1879 of consumption. He lived at 2 Whitworth Terrace in Drumcondra, which is on the north side of Dublin.
  • Isabella Erwin, the fourth daughter of John Erwin, aged 16 years, died 20 April 1879 at 39 Eglinton Street in Belfast.
  • Bernard Peyton, age 61, died 9 May 1879 at Creagh’s Villa, Castlebar, County Mayo, the eldest son of the late Captain John Hamilton Peyton of Port County, Leitrim.
