School District FM Station On Air With Just One ‘Ad’ The Omaha School District’s new $100,000 radio station at Central High School went on the air Monday with 30 minutes of speeches, fanfare and one “commercial.” The commercial, read by a Central High student, said “Cigarette smoking kills some people. Shouldn’t you quit for good? Your good?” At the dedication at 10 a.m.. School Board Vice President Joseph M. Hart Jr. said the station, with call letters KIOS- FM, is “illustrative of the ef forts of the school board to ex pand our curriculum.” Supt. Owen A. Knutzen said the station will be used “for instructional purposes only.” The 26,000-watt transmitter has been sending test signals at 91.5 megacycles for several weeks and has been heard as far away as Ashland, Neb. Other school board members at the dedication were Mrs. Maurice Frank, Mrs. Dorothy Beavers and the Rev. Emmett Streeter. The station will cost about $40,000 a year to operate. It will train students in electronics and broadcasting and carry instruc tional programs and classical music.
