16C AKKAiNSAS GAZh/lTis, Backers Seek Higher Power On Channel 1( Morning Young fast, Greater Exchange, Arkansas eant, Start of construction on Little I Af» ock’s fourth toTovicton station A*rernooni Southwest Rock’s fourth television station, UHF Channel 16, has been delayed pending Federal Com munications Commission ap proval of a proposal greatly to increase the station’s power. Cliff B. Ford, general man ager and vice president of Arkansas operations of the Victor Broadcasting Company, which owns Radio Station KMYO at little Rock and other businesses in the United States arid Europe, said FCC approval of a power of 1.068,000 watts was expected any day. He said this would give the UHF station a range perhaps five miles less in radius than that of KTHV (Channel 11), which operates on a power of 312,000 watts. UHF stations require greater power because of the nature of their broadcast signals. UHF signals more nearly resemble light rays, which travel in a direct line. Very high frequency (VHF) stations emit signals that follow the earth’s curva iure, giving them greater broadcast range on less power. Ford said the Victor firm held an option on a site for an antenna tower on Shinall Moun tain adjacent to the site of the KARK-TV and KTHV towers add that the height of the tower would be 1,144 feet, its top 2,209 feet above mean sea level, if the plans are aDproved by the FCC. The proposed air date for Channel 16 originally was De cember 1, 1966. but this had to be changed because of the difficulty in obtaining color equipment. Ford said in March, when the FCC approved con struction of the original design of the station, that the air date would be spring of 1967. Expan sion of the power will now de lay the opening of the station at least until October, and possibly later, but Ford said Wednesday he hoped to have the station on the air sometime next year. Victor Broadcasting also has applied' to the FCC for permits for UHF stations on Channel 24 at Memphis and Channel 29 at Tulsa. Several groups are planning or discussing the creation of a fourth national television net work. Ford said the new station at* Little Rock would be affiliat ed with the fourth network. He already has been in touch with the Overmyer group, whose plans for a network operating initially for three hours daily seem to be the most advanced, £e said. The station in addition would utilize syndicated materials and movies. All of the telecasting would be in color, which Ford said was especially good on the UHF bands. Hank’s Rotary Marion.
